Meals Served
The meals are frozen and can be heated in a microwave or oven.
The meal includes an entrée; rice, potato, or noodles; vegetable; roll with margarine; and instant non-fat milk.
Fruit or dessert is included in several meals. The breakfasts have eggs, pancakes or French toast, fruit, a choice of juice, and instant non-fat milk. Each meal meets one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances for older adults. Deliveries
The meals are delivered weekly according to a predetermined schedule. The delivery day will remain the same, but the time may vary from week to week. A minimum of seven meals is required for delivery.
Who is served?
Adults who are:
• Sixty years of age or older
• Unable to leave home without assistance
• Unable to prepare a nutritious meal
• Lacking support from family or friends
• Spouse (any age) of an eligible person
• Disabled younger adults who reside with an eligible person
Ordering Meals
Request an application by calling the Nutrition program at 425.347.1229, or by clicking Application. Mail, fax, or email nutrition@sssc.org, the completed application and meal order forms back to the office. Once they are received and approved, meal delivery will begin. Within the first two weeks you will be visited in your home to determine if the meals are meeting your needs and if other services that support older adults are desired.
Meal orders for the next delivery should be given to the driver, mailed to the office or phoned in.
Phone orders are taken 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and should be received two days before the usual delivery day.
Donations
The suggested donation is $2.50 per meal or $17.50 per week to help the program serve more meals to needy older adults in Snohomish County. Donations may be made with cash, check, or Basic Food program voucher (food stamps). No person will be denied meals because of their inability to donate.
Meals on Wheels is funded by a combination of funds from the Federal Older Americans Act, Snohomish County, United Way of Snohomish County, donor giving and participant donations.

Eat at least 3 ounces of whole grain foods daily.

Include lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, and nuts.
Choose a diet low in saturated fat, trans-fat, cholesterol, sodium, and added sugars.
If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.

Senior Dining
Senior Services Nutrition program partners with senior centers, Senior Information & Assistance and other community groups to provide nutritious meals to seniors at 14 centers throughout Snohomish County including 5 ethinic meal sites. This senior dining program provides older adults with positive social interaction, an informal support system and the opportunity to get involved in meaningful volunteer activities.
Information and assistance is available at most meal sites to connect older adults with other health or supportive services such as transportation, home-health aides, home modification, or other food assistance programs such as The Basic Food Program (food stamps).
Who is served?
Adults who are:
• Age 60 and older.
• Spouse (any age), of an eligible person.
• Disabled persons under age 60 who reside in housing facilities occupied primarily. by the elderly where senior dining meals are served.
• Disabled persons who reside at home and accompany older adults to meal sites.
• Meal site volunteers.
Meals served Each meal provides at least one-third of the daily Recommended Dietary Allowances for older adults. For many, this is the main meal of the day. An example of a typical meal is: Savory meatloaf

 Ensure Plus
What us Ensure Plus®?
Ensure Plus® is a complete high calorie drink for people who need extra nutrition. It is a medical nutrition supplement intended for people who need to gain weight. Each 8 ounce serving provides 355 calories and 13 grams of protein. This product is appropriate for low sodium and low cholesterol diets. If you have had an unintentional weight loss of more than 10 pounds in the last 6 months it is important to share this information with your doctor. Talk with your doctor or dietitian if you have any health concerns regarding this supplement.
Eligibility
To have Ensure Plus® delivered to your home from Senior Services of Snohomish County's Nutrition Program you must meet the following criteria:
• Age 60 or older.
• Homebound and unable to leave home without assistance.
• Unable to prepare nutritious meals.
• Approval from the Dietitian at Meals on Wheels for this product.
Cost
A donation of $25 per case (24 cans) is requested. We accept cash, checks, money orders, and food stamps.

Using Ensure Plus®
To get the most benefit from Ensure Plus®, follow these simple tips:
• Start slowly. A period of adjustment may be needed for your body to get used to such a concentrated meal.
• If you find the Ensure Plus® too rich, try diluting by adding milk or soy milk.
• Store Ensure Plus® unopened at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Serve chilled for best flavor.
•Once opened, a can should be tightly covered, refrigerated, and used within 24 hours.
Ensure Plus® Receipes
Mocha Shake
In a blender container, combine 1 serving Ensure Plus®, 1 scoop vanilla ice cream, 3 Tbsp chocolate syrup, 1 tsp instant coffee powder and dash cinnamon.
Strawberry Shake
In a blender container, combine 1 serving Ensure Plus®, 1 scoop vanilla ice cream, and 1/2 cup frozen strawberries (slightly thawed).
Chocolate Shake
In a blender container, combine 1 serving Ensure Plus®, 2 Tbsp chocolate syrup, and a scoop of vanilla or chocolate ice cream. For a tasty treat, add 1/4 banana.
Choco-Nutty Shake
In a blender container, combine 1 serving Ensure Plus®, 2 Tbsp chocolate syrup, 1 scoop ice cream and 2 Tbsp peanut butter.
Berry-Delicious Shake
In a blender container, combine 1 serving Ensure Plus®; 1/4 cup each frozen strawberries and raspberries, slightly thawed; 1/4 medium banana and 1 scoop ice cream.
Orange Smoothie
In a blender container, combine 1 serving Ensure Plus®; 1/4 cup pasteurized egg substitute; 1/4 cup frozen orange juice concentrate; 1/4 tsp vanilla.
Malt Flavor
Blend 1 serving Ensure Plus® with 1 heaping tsp of malt powder (can be purchased in any grocery store - look in the flavoring section).
Butterscotch
To 1 serving Ensure Plus®, add 1 tsp butterscotch syrup or 1 Tbsp butterscotch pudding powder. Add a little brown sugar for extra flavor.
Eggnog
Add 1 Tbsp egg custard mix (available in the pudding section of the grocery store) to Ensure Plus® and blend. For extra flavor, add 1/4 tsp vanilla and sprinkle with nutmeg. Note: Do NOT use raw eggs – you may become ill!
Dry Gelatin
To offer a wide variety of fruit flavors, add 1-1/2 tsp of dry flavored gelatin to 1/2 cup Ensure Plus® and stir well. If allowed to set in the refrigerator, it may tend to thicken.
Fruit Puree
In a blender container, combine 1 serving Ensure Plus® with 1/4 to 1/2 cup canned, fresh, or frozen fruit (peaches, berries, bananas, etc.)
Extracts
Look in the spice section of the grocery store. Add a few drops of your choice - vanilla, almond, lemon, or orange to flavor the Ensure Plus®.
(If desired, ice cream can be omitted from any recipe).
