Mary Hawkins is excited about having Senior Services’ 17th senior apartment community named in memory of her parents. Both Mick Hawkins, who died some time ago, and Helen Hawkins, who passed away last summer, were well known throughout the Lake Stevens area they both loved.
“My parents loved it there,” Mary says. “They loved the community; they loved the lake, and they didn’t want to live anywhere else.”
Mary says it was difficult for her mother when she had to leave her beloved home because of declining health. “I just think she would be glad to know her property will provide a place for other people leaving places they don’t want to leave either,” Mary says.
As in all Senior Services independent affordable housing, a lot of thought and planning have gone into designing Hawkins House. “We focus on quality,” says Chris Jowell, Housing Development Director at Senior Services. “We have been doing this a long time so we know what works. We put in handrails and grab bars. We have call systems so if there is an emergency, residents need only pull a cord to get help.”
Senior Services’ provides more than 700 affordable units throughout the county. All buildings have an on-site resident manager as well as secure entrances with intercom systems. Hallways have handrails and are well lit. At Hawkins House and some other Senior Services housing communities, a lighting system on each floor lets residents know if the laundry facilities are in use. Each community has appealing common areas that include a large community room and kitchen which are used for special events and can be reserved for special gatherings with family and friends. Some buildings also have a library and/or hobby/craft room.
