The Washington Basic Food Program (formerly known as food stamps), is funded by the federal government Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP is the largest nutrition assistance program in America and is under the administration of the United States Department of Agriculture. The goal of the program is “to alleviate hunger and malnutrition … by increasing food purchasing power for all eligible households who apply for participation (Food Research and Action Center).” Currently, over 820,430, or 12.5 percent of Washington residents use food stamps.

Basic Food helps people afford a nutritious diet by providing eligible households an electronic benefits card and monthly benefits to buy food at participating grocery stores.

You may be eligible for Basic Food if your household’s income (before taxes or other deductions) is not more than the amounts listed below based on the number of people in your household:

Household Size

Monthly Income

1

$1,816

2

$2,452

3
